The other day, we had a new beekeeper come over to visit. Of course, we
showed him around the beeyard. He asked us about the holes in our supers
and the inner covers. We explained they were for the bees to come and go
quickly and easily and so the house bees don't have to run up and down
through both brood chambers and all the supers to put away nectar.
Sometimes this is an awful lot of steps they save -
But don't they freeze in winter with those holes?
Nope, if you look at this picture you can see how the
bees are starting to 'close the door' with propolis.
They close it in winter and open it in spring, all by themselves.
It is controversial, but we like them and so do our bees. It is fun to stand and
watch them come flying through the air and swoop right through the hole.
Sometimes they have to land beside it and wait their turn to get in -
Anyway, that is the story of why some beehives have
holes in the supers. All of ours do, do yours?
