Following The WebWitch's
Garden Hive - 2007
The continuing story of the adventures of a city kid into beekeeping and
gardening -
In February this
year it snowed!
When I looked
closely, my bees
had just about
closed up the
upper-level entry
hole.  A few days
ago it was warm
- mid 50's - and
they were using
it constantly.
When it gets
cold, they close
the door!
About a week later, we looked inside the hive and
found out these little ladies still had lots of food left
and were starting to expand their brood nest too.  We
have more cold weather coming, I hope they can cover
it all.
They are already bringing in pollen and some nectar from somewhere - the
red maple is not out yet, but I have seen some of my dandelions blooming
and my daffodils are out full force.  I have ordered about half a dozen
lavender plants and am looking for some creeping rosemary - I noticed
my bees like those plants alot so I will give them some more this year.  I
will keep you posted -

Update - I planted about 15 rosemary plants (2 of them are creeping
rosemary) and about 12 lavender plants in 2007.  The plants took off like
crazy and my bees like them fine, but they really went crazy over the two
catmint bushes that I put in the rain garden.  So I will put in about a dozen
of those this year too.  I like them, they have pretty little purple-blue
flowers that smell a little spicy and they bloom most of the year.  My
philosophy is:  if you are going to plant something anyway, why not
something both you and the bees like.  All my lovely wish-books are
arriving, ready to entice me to order.  So I am working on those orders and
saving my pennies to get what I would like to add to my yard this year.
Ready, set, go!!!
