a DNA study of bears in the southeast revealed the following bear
population numbers (approximate)

state                        mountains                    coast
South carolina          900                                225
north carolina        4,000                             7,000
georgia                     1,200                               800
tennessee                 1,250

The population of bears is rising, more people-bear encounters are
happening.  There have been only 3 people killed by bears in the eastern
us since the early 1900s, 2 in tennessee and 1 in new york state.  but don't
take chances.

Black Bears and Bees
to PCBA on 10 January 2008

If you have bees and live in Pickens, Greenville, Oconee, Anderson, or
Spartanburg Counties, you need an electric fence.
Black bears claim a range, males - 17.2 square miles
females - 6.3 square miles - size can vary by region
Bears eat anything and everything.  if you don't want bears, don't leave
anything edible outside:
1. bring in your birdfeeders
every night
2. don't leave pet food outside
3. don't leave your trash outside or on the porch where the bears can smell it
4. don't feed the bears - believe it or not, some people are trying to attract
them. please don't be one of them.
finish your fence quickly and keep it on.  Once the
bears get through the fence and know about your bees,
they say it is almost impossible to keep them out again.
One of our club members tells how the bears around
his place watched him putting up the fence and moving
the bees inside.  The bears are even coming into towns
- pickens had one or two, so be aware they are out
there.
