PRESIDENTS LETTER 10 November 2011

Pickens County Beekeepers Association
MEETING: NOVEMBER 10TH
PICKENS PRES.CHURCH
REFRESHMENTS 6:30PM
MEETING 7:00PM

First of all, let me say thank you for allowing me to participate as President of the
PCBA. I truly have learned a great deal during this time and I hope that this experience
helps me become a better beekeeper and advocate for beekeepers for the State of South
Carolina. I understand that we each have assets and everyone has a role to play when it
comes to educating the general public in beekeeping. I certainly addressed these two years
with an open heart and mind and feel that I did everything in my power to unite all of us
as one so that we may become an association for educating others. I certainly feel that the
executive officers did an outstanding job and handled every situation appropriately and I
implemented their requests accordingly.  Even though those of us in business for profit
have a hard time finding the proper balance at times and unfortunately disagree from time
to time we should never allow those disagreements to invade the educational time of the
Pickens County Beekeepers Association. I had hoped during my time as President that I
would be able to improve the things I thought needed improving. Did I accomplish those
goals? I’m not sure but I did try. Now it is time for someone else to do the same. It
certainly is easy to sit on the sidelines and complain about the coach but it is a different
game when you become the coach. In my experience, most of the issues that arise in
groups like these are from people who like to complain and everyone knows them as the
“complainers” but they never want to be the “coach”.  My roots with this association goes
back many years in fact if my memory is correct Winfred Trotter and I are the only active
members from when I first joined the PCBA 13 years ago. In another words, when I look
over the group Winfred is the only person in the room that was a member when I joined
13 years ago and at that time there were only about ten or so people coming to the
meetings. We should all agree that we certainly have come a long way and should take
pride in the accomplishments that the PCBA has made. Thursday evening we will have a
discussion about issues going on at the state level, Christmas Potluck, Silent Auction,
Certified Level Class, Save The Bees Grant, and we will vote in new officers. As you can
see, we still have lots to do and our new officers will be looking for players that want to
play on their team. Where will you be?

Bee Well,
Kerry Owen
