PRESIDENTS LETTER January 1, 2010
    Dear Beekeepers,
Oh my goodness! The Christmas Parade was so much fun. Thanks to each of you
that helped decorate or wave - it was very good for the PCBA. We have had several
inquiries already for the “Beegrinners Course”. A lot has happened and l will try to briefly
hit some of the details here so we may focus totally on our speaker when we have our
January 14th meeting which will be held in the lower level of the Farm Bureau office
located on Hwy 178 between Pickens and Easley at 6:30 Jeff Friend our new Treasurer
will be collecting yearly dues so bring $10 for the PCBA and $10 for the SCSBA
membership. Dr. Finley has agreed to bring refreshments. The Beekeeping Class is
confirmed in the Easley Library starting Jan. 25 all students interested can view specifics at
pcbeekeepers@yahoo.com. I assume all of you heeded the warning to feed your bees
before the cold rainy weather because if you have weak ones now they might not make it.
If you do have a weak beehive try placing a frame of honey beside the cluster sometimes
they get so weak in numbers they can’t maneuver to the feeder. Sometimes you can screen
the hole in a inner cover and place the weak hive on top of a good hive so the heat from
the strong hive warms the weak. Don’t forget to leave the top hive an exit/entrance.
Congratulations to Dwight Porter for returning to his Presidential post for the Greenville
County Association and thanks again to Dwight Porter for representing us in the past on the
state board. The executive committee voted on the state board representative and I have
been appointed by them to represent the PCBA and I gladly accept the position. Our
speaker for the Jan. 14th meeting is Mr. Robert Brewer. He has been a beekeeper for 20
years and an Extension Agent for 25 years. Robert is a Certified International Honey Judge
also serves on the Honey Board and Mr. Brewer can brew up a nice bottle of mead. He
will be teaching us how to make mead. Mead is a wine that is made from honey and was
served in Ancient times at weddings and special events. Robert Brewer is traveling here
from Georgia and we should handle our business affairs quickly so he may have our full
attention.  I’ll see you at the January 14th meeting in the Farm Bureau building come early
so we can take care of membership dues, name tags, door prize tickets, Class sign up, talk
bees and enjoy refreshments.  Who knows we may get a small sample of Mead!
Bee Well,
Kerry
