| The 2009 Beginner’s Certified Beekeeping Course and our Local Honey Bees Need YOUR Help! Long after the national media frenzy about the ongoing honey bee crisis – CCD – dies down and long after “the Bee Movie” disappears from the theaters and is only a DVD memory, one critically important truth will remain: The number one pollinator in the United States will need our help continuing its 20-year struggle to survive! The wild, or feral, honey bee population dwindled and died out years ago due to mites and diseases, so the United States’ diverse food crops depend on honey bees and beekeepers to ensure our continuing food supply. Because the beekeeping industry has become more challenging and less profitable, fewer and fewer young people are becoming beekeepers. The Pickens County Beekeepers Association (PCBA) and all other beekeeping organizations are working hard to promote the art and science of beekeeping. To this end, the PCBA sponsors an annual beginner’s beekeeping course in conjunction with Clemson University to provide education and state certification as a beekeeper. This course is designed to introduce and familiarize a novice to honey bees and how to care for them. An important tool is the awarding of free scholarship hives to the most qualified students. These scholarship hives serve as: • An incentive to excel • An opportunity for deserving students who might not be able to afford to get started • A news item that can garner publicity for sponsor, student, and honey bees This is where we need you. The PCBA wants to award two scholarship hives to students in the upcoming 2009 Certified Beekeeping Course. We ask that you consider this sponsorship opportunity. Your contribution not only helps provide a scholarship hive to a deserving student, it provides you with: • Prominent signage for the 6-week course at the Clemson Extension Office in Pickens • Prominent on-screen credits before and after slide show presentations • Credit on our fliers and other publicity materials posted throughout the community • Identification on our PCBA website: www.pickenscountyscbeekeepers.com • The heartfelt gratitude of the PCBA membership, our students, and our community • A certificate of appreciation from the PCBA suitable for public display • The knowledge that you have made an important contribution to not only the beekeeping community, but to the future Point of Contact: Charlotte Anderson, (864)878-8593, cdanderson1@charter.net 303 Hoyt Anderson Rd Pickens SC 29671 You can sponsor a new beekeeper!
